Instagram has launched its new video creation app, Edits, which takes direct aim at ByteDance’s popular CapCut, a key player in the video editing space for TikTok creators. The standalone app, now available for free on both iOS and Android, brings advanced editing tools, project management features, and performance tracking for video creators.
First teased in January, Edits has now made its debut, offering users a range of professional-grade editing tools that go beyond what Instagram’s main app offers. These include green screen effects, subject cutouts, and AI-driven animations, as well as background replacements. These capabilities bring it on par with the features already found in CapCut, which has become a go-to app for TikTok video creators.
Instagram has positioned Edits as a more specialized tool for creators who are serious about video production. Instagram head Adam Mosseri highlighted the app’s unique focus on helping creators manage their projects, track notes, and access detailed video performance data. Edits is designed to provide creators with more flexibility and depth than Instagram’s standard tools.

Although the app shares many similarities with CapCut, Mosseri emphasized that Edits would eventually offer a broader range of creative features, setting it apart as more than just a competitor to CapCut. Future updates are expected to include additional AI editing tools, keyframe animation, and collaborative features that would allow multiple users to work on a project together.
With TikTok’s future in the U.S. remaining uncertain due to ongoing regulatory pressure, Instagram’s move to introduce Edits could be seen as a strategic attempt to capture the next generation of video creators, ensuring Meta maintains its relevance in the competitive video editing space. As TikTok’s dominance faces new challenges, Edits could quickly become a go-to platform for those looking to create videos for Instagram and other social media platforms.
